Gone are the days when tractors and other agricultural machinery could burn just about anything in their engines and the traditional red diesel (gas oil) was used at will and without much thought to its supply or storage. With the advent of strict emissions requirements worldwide, radical changes to vehicle design have become paramount, notably the introduction of very sophisticated fuel injection systems and ever more elaborate exhaust after treatment equipment. This prompted a change to the gas oil standards in 2011, lowering the maximum allowable sulphur content, introducing a lubricity specification and recognising that biodiesel had entered the supply chain. On 15th April 2018, off road and on road diesel have increased in biocontent to 7.25% via the Road Transport Fuels Obligation and we are seeing more problems from the larger hike in biocontent in red diesel or EN590 dyed red off road applications.

For modern engines to work with optimal output for prolonged periods of time, it essential that as much of the fuel delivered to the combustion chambers (cylinders) is burned as is possible and that deposits deep within the injection system are kept to a minimum. This is not achievable with basic refinery or terminal sourced fuel, whether you buy gas oil (red diesel) or road diesel (white diesel). To this end, it is essential that a fuel additive (or combination of fuel additives) is added to the fuel either at source or into the local bulk storage tank. This is, in fact, an expectation of the agricultural equipment design engineers although their dealerships and distributors are reluctant to acknowledge this.

A note also on fuel storage. We see many fuel samples sent to us for testing that frankly need no analysis at all. It is obvious from their appearance that they are dirty, full of water, full of bacterial growth, etc, etc. The stereotypical farmyard fuel tank is no longer fit for purpose: fuel needs to be stored in as clean an environments possible and have any water and sediment drained off the bottom frequently. Operators and owners of agricultural machinery risk having their warranties void if their fuel quality is not up to expectations.
