Automotive and Transport
Fuel additives for on-road vehicles are nothing new. The history is well documented and perhaps the best known is the lead-based anti-knock additive used as an octane booster and valve seat recession additive for forty or so years after the Second World War (it had its origins in the 100 octane fuel required for supercharged combat aircraft).
From the late 1970s, however, it became increasingly apparent that engine design and technology were starting to outpace anything that was happening in fuel science at the refinery and engine manufacturers started to demand higher ‘quality’ fuels. Couple this with the advent of bio-components in road fuels – ethanol in gasoline (petrol) and FAME in diesel – along with the removal of lead and the steady reduction of sulphur, then the industry was set a huge challenge. No longer were engines being designed around the fuels available but fuel would need to be supplied to meet the demands of engine design.

The outcome, as well as involving some different fuel blends at a refinery, involves extensive use of automotive fuel additives, notably deposit control chemistry to keep carburettors, injectors, valves and combustion chambers clean. Additionally, additives can be added to the ‘package’ to guard against corrosion; to keep water out of fuel; to increase the fuel’s lubricity; to improve a fuel’s cold-weather handling characteristics; to improve the combustion characteristics (octane rating in gasoline; cetane rating in diesel); to act as a lead-replacement; and to extend the shelf life of fuel in infrequently used vehicles.
Whether you operate a commercial vehicle, off-road equipment or car, fuel additives should really be a fact of life in the 21st century: few, if any, modern engines and their associated exhaust treatment systems will operate at optimum performance for very long if they are only burning base fuel. The requirements of the Worldwide Fuels Charter are only realistically and cost-effectively achieved by the judicious use of appropriate fuel additives and a number of engine manufacturers are now prescribing the use of fuel additives.
Challenges
Buying fuel from a recognised forecourt brand usually means that the fuel contains at least the bare minimum of useful fuel additives. But there are many independent and isolated retailers whose options are limited and either cannot or chose not to sell additised fuel. Also, any fleet operator with their own bulk storage tank is very likely only receiving base fuel from a refinery, terminal or fuel supplier. This fuel can be enhanced after supply by exocet® additives.
exocet® Solutions
exocet® automotive fuel additives are already supplied to forecourt retailers, hauliers, bus and coach operators and resellers to provide differentiated and technically enhanced fuel.
