Would You Know Whether Your Engine Had Diesel Bug? Find Out How To Tell

fuel being poured

Diesel bug is the contamination of fuel by microbes. This occurs as a result of water and air being present within the fuel tank, this can be for several different reasons from condensation to water spray from the sea. In the right conditions, these microbes grow between the water and fuel or on the walls of the tank, but as they have a very short life cycle they die off quickly leaving a sludge-like consistency in the bottom of the fuel tank.

This is where the problems start.

If this ‘sludge’ gets sucked into fuel lines within the engine then it can be the cause of filter and injector blockages, resulting in engine failures and costly repair work.

How Can Diesel Bug Be Prevented?

To avoid a buildup of diesel bug it is recommended that your engine is cleaned regularly to remove any ‘sludge’ and checked for contamination to prevent potential future build-ups. This can be done by regularly draining water from the fuel and water separator or by keeping the fuel tank as full as possible. Another tip is to use petrol stations that are busy because they will have a high turnover rate of fuel meaning there is less chance of water contamination due to condensation in their storage tanks.

However, if you suspect that you have diesel bug or want to ensure a fast way of making sure your engine is free of the contamination, exocet® recommend using Anti-Bug fuel additive that kills off any microbes without adding to any sludge or slime build-up. Some of this diesel bug additive’s main features include:

  • Broad-spectrum additive covering a variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts,
  • Has an immediate effect,
  • Clean-up rates are 24-36 hours,
  • Eliminates plugging of filters and gauges,
  • Protects against tank and pipe corrosion,
  • Does not adversely affect fuel combustion or emissions quality,
  • Fully compatible with steels, aluminium and zinc and with polyethylene and polypropylene,
  • Has no adverse effect on wastewater systems or municipal sewage treatment.

This diesel bug additive is approved as a fuel additive by the following car and fuel giants; Mercedes Benz, DAF, MAN, NATO, Deutz, Shell, the Swiss Army and many others, meaning you know that you can trust us.

Diesel Bug Symptoms

If you notice any of the following issues then this could indicate fuel contamination:

  • Filters keep getting blocked
  • Noticeable sediments within blocked filters
  • Unexpected loss of power to the engine
  • Increased fuel or oil consumption
  • More rapid vehicle component corrosion
  • The engine stopping suddenly
  • Difficulties when starting the engine

Should you spot any of the signs listed above contact the exocet® technical team. Our team can advise the best course of action to resolve the engine issues, or in this case, eliminate the presence of Diesel Bug in your engine.
